Standard Business Reporting initiative

OSR is one of 13 government agencies partnering in the Standard Business Reporting (SBR) initiative being led by the Australian Treasury.

SBR will ease the business-to-government reporting burden by simplifying forms and using the latest technology and software to enable businesses to pre-fill forms with commonly used data. It also uses transactions that provide instant validation and receipting of form lodgement to save businesses time and money.

Part of the SBR approach is to introduce a single secure sign-on for government online services, meaning only one user ID, password or digital certificate for each agency interaction.

SBR will be progressively implemented from July 2010 and will save business up to $800 million.

The OSR payroll tax functions using SBR will be the monthly calculator from July 2010 (for the return due August 7) and the annual reconciliation (from late October, 2010).

OSR will provide further information when available regarding the implementation of the SBR initiative.

Will it cost me anything to use SBR?

SBR is accessed only from your accounting, financial or payroll software, and the government has not charged any party for the use of the SBR facilities. If there is an expectation of additional payments/cost to your software provider for SBR functionality, this is a matter for each business to consider.

What do you need to do before you lodge?

You will need an AUSkey to lodge with us using your SBR-enabled software.

AUSkey is a single key for accessing government online services. It is common to all the government agencies participating in SBR-enabled reporting and over time will allow you to login to a range of other business to government websites.

We recommend registering for an AUSkey and installing it prior to using your SBR-enabled software to report to us. This ensures you are set up and ready to start SBR-enabled reporting without interruption from 1 July 2010.

Is your software SBR-enabled?

Software providers have the choice of SBR-enabling the monthly calculator and annual reconciliation.

You will need to check with your software provider to see which function has been SBR-enabled.

Where do I register?

If you have an ATO digital certificate, you can use it to register for an AUSkey. Read more about AUSkey at:

What else can I use an AUSkey for?

Clients that have an AUSkey can also log into Payroll Tax Online Services using their AUSkey. When using an AUSkey to login, the following payroll tax online services are available:

  • Monthly Calculator

  • Annual Return

  • Payments

  • Change of Details

  • Nil Return
