Receiving unclaimed money
Once OSR has determined your entitlement to unclaimed money, your payment will be securely transferred electronically to your nominated bank account within 5 days of being approved.
You can also elect to have your unclaimed money issued by cheque and posted to you or your agent.
Unclaimed money held by OSR
Unclaimed money OSR holds includes: dividends, principal and interest, trust account funds, expenses, refunds and overpayments, deposits, premiums, distributions from liquidations, proceeds of sale, royalties, commissions, creditors, debentures, convertible notes and superannuation benefits.
Australian Securities Investment Commission, the Australian Tax Office and other State Governments
ASIC holds unclaimed money from banks, credit unions, building societies, life insurance companies and friendly societies. View the FIDO (ASIC) Unclaimed Money website.
From 1 July 2007, the ATO holds unclaimed superannuation money from Superannuation Funds and Retirement Saving Accounts. This does not include unclaimed money from NSW Public Sector Superannuation Funds or unclaimed superannuation money returned to the OSR prior to 1 July 2007.
Other state governments also hold unclaimed money from companies and superannuation funds.
Where does OSR get unclaimed money from?
Unclaimed money held by OSR has been deposited by employers, government agencies, superannuation funds, local councils, and State Trustees because they have not been able to locate and return the money to the owners.
You can search for money held by OSR in NSW from 1996. Money collected before 1996 may be listed in back issues of the NSW Government Gazette.
Unclaimed superannuation benefits
OSR holds unclaimed superannuation benefits which were lodged from 1 July 1997 to 30 June 2007. These benefits were lodged where the member was deceased or had reached the eligibility age (65 for women and men) and no contributions had been made to the fund for two years.
From 1 July 2007, OSR only receives unclaimed superannuation benefits from NSW Public Sector Superannuation Funds. All other superannuation benefits are lodged with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
Questions about superannuation should be directed to your superannuation fund directly.
